Captain America Civil War

Captain America 3

Looks like once again the events of a Captain America movie will significantly impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain America 3 will reportedly bring in Robert Downey Jr’s Tony stark to begin the events of Civil War, the 2006-2007 comic book storyline.
Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly in contract discussions to play Tony Stark for the next installment of Captain America. According to Variety, the actor is in “final negotiations” to return as Iron Man in Captain America 3, which will possibly bring Marvel’s flagship Civil War comic book storyline to the big screen, and subsequently launch the next phase in the MCU.
The Civil War was Marvel’s 2006 flagship event written by Mark Millar (of Kick-Ass fame). It sees Earth’s Mightiest Heroes torn in two by the US government’s opinion-splitting Superhero Registration Act; a legislative bill forcing all vigilantes to register their identities with the US Government and act under its command. Tony Stark, who’s never bothered hiding his identity, sides with the government and becomes a public advocate for the Superhero Registration Act. While Steve Rogers, believing that everyone who goes about endangering themselves to save others should have the right to hide their identity if they so wish.
Captain America becomes the perceived rebel and Iron Man the face of government lawfulness, and the results of their stand-off are significant & ugly. The fallout from the events will have a significant effect on Avengers 4, and also impact new characters such as Doctor Strange and Ant-Man, and their solo films.
“Originally, Marvel wanted to hire Downey for a small role, which would have required just three weeks of work. But Downey wanted Stark to have a more substantial role in the film’s plot, which would give him more screen time and naturally a bigger payday. This angered Marvel Entertainment chief Ike Perlmutter, who ordered the screenwriters to write Iron Man out of the script entirely, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.”
Variety explains that Marvel boss Kevin Feige argued for the deal, considering the Civil War storyline a new breath of life for Marvel’s much loved cinematic characters that could extend over the next several years. Despite the dark consequences & the fact that the Avengers will be splitting up, Civil War could presumably be the biggest film franchise crossover we’ve ever seen, even by Marvel Studios’ standards.
Downey will reportedly pick up $40 million plus backend participation for Captain America 3, as reported by Variety.
According to Badass Digest, the title for Captain America 3 will be either Captain America: Civil War or Captain America: Fallen Son. Fallen Son, of course, is a reference to a post-Civil War limited series.
It was earlier believed that The Infinity Gauntlet will be the centerpiece of phase 3, considering the fact that Marvel is building up Thanos as the big bad evil in the MCU. But now it looks like the Civil War storyline will take it’s place. It seems a much better & timely decision considering the emotional moments & tense drama in Civil War being arguably much higher than Infinity Gauntlet. And after the massive & grim consequences of Civil War has passed, Thanos might be the reason that would eventually reunite Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The Mad Titan could take on main villain duties in Avengers 4, which would presumably drop around 2021 if the three year gap between big crossover events remain.
According to Badass Digest, the Russos, who are already set to direct Captain America 3, are also rumored to be the studio’s top choice to direct both Marvel’s The Avengers 3 and 4.
This week, Marvel revealed plans to release a new comic book miniseries that will introduce fans to the Civil War in 2015, before “Captain America 3″ is released. Marvel also tweeted “#CivilWar #1 — Summer 2015″ with the cover image.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier helmers Anthony and Joe Russo will return for Captain America 3, working off a script written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Captain America 3 is scheduled to release on May 6, 2016
